Background of the Study

Oncology nursing is an emotionally demanding field due to the nature of the diseases and the intensity of care required for cancer patients. Oncology nurses often encounter emotionally charged situations, such as caring for terminally ill patients, managing pain, and supporting families through difficult times (Liu et al., 2023). Emotional resilience is the ability to effectively cope with stress, adapt to challenging circumstances, and maintain a sense of well-being despite adversity (Smith et al., 2024). For oncology nurses, emotional resilience is crucial in maintaining job satisfaction, ensuring the quality of care, and preventing burnout.

At Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), oncology nurses play a vital role in providing compassionate care to patients battling cancer. However, the emotional demands of this role can lead to emotional exhaustion, burnout, and decreased quality of care if not properly managed. Understanding the factors that influence emotional resilience among oncology nurses can help in developing strategies to enhance their well-being and work performance (Liu et al., 2023). These factors include individual coping mechanisms, institutional support, work environment, and peer relationships.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of emotional resilience in oncology nursing, there is limited research on the specific factors that influence resilience in this profession, particularly at ABSUTH. Nurses who lack emotional resilience may experience fatigue, emotional burnout, and a diminished ability to provide high-quality care. This study aims to investigate the key factors that influence emotional resilience in oncology nurses at ABSUTH, with a focus on identifying strategies for enhancing resilience within the hospital setting.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the factors that influence emotional resilience among oncology nurses at Abia State University Teaching Hospital.

2. To evaluate the impact of emotional resilience on the job performance and well-being of oncology nurses.

3. To recommend strategies for improving emotional resilience among oncology nurses at ABSUTH.

Research Questions

1. What are the key factors that influence emotional resilience among oncology nurses at Abia State University Teaching Hospital?

2. How does emotional resilience affect the job performance and well-being of oncology nurses?

3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance emotional resilience among oncology nurses?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant relationship between emotional resilience and job performance among oncology nurses at ABSUTH.

2. Factors such as institutional support, peer relationships, and coping mechanisms positively influence emotional resilience in oncology nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on oncology nurses working at Abia State University Teaching Hospital. The limitations include the potential subjectivity in measuring emotional resilience and the variability in individual coping strategies among nurses.

Definitions of Terms
